Zandri Wells, an exceptional asset manager at Atterbury and a Chartered Accountant (SA) is a talented individual with a genuine passion for the retail sector. Growing up in Pretoria, Wells developed determination and ambition. Her entrepreneurial spirit started at a young age, selling Oros and cupcakes in front of her parents’ house at the age of six, proving her natural business instincts which, she attributes to her dad.
Wells believes in the importance of being true to oneself and embracing authenticity. She values the bond with her family and friends, always seeking to create memorable experiences, especially with her husband and two daughters.
At the age of 22, she had her first paying job as an article clerk at Deloitte. During this time, Wells had the opportunity to be part of a team that performed an audit at Atterbury. This experience ignited her passion for the retail sector, where she thrives in its dynamic and fast-paced environment.
As an asset manager, Wells oversees various retail, office and industrial assets. Her role combines financial acumen, market knowledge, operational expertise and strategic thinking. She aims to maximise returns and create value for the company. Wells is also responsible for reviewing external valuations of the Atterbury Portfolio and collaborating closely with external valuers, providing valuable insights into the market.
Wells enjoys being part of the Atterbury asset management team, where every day presents new challenges. She takes pleasure in building business relationships and connecting with various individuals, as well as working closely with tenants to understand their businesses. Her diverse skill set and ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment contribute to her success.
While gender equality and diversity in leadership roles remain issues in South Africa, Wells has not encountered this in her career. Atterbury provides equal opportunities for all employees, allowing them to reach their full potential. Women often face biases and stereotypes in the workplace, but she believes that in promoting gender diversity and inclusion at all levels within organisations and encouraging mentorship and sponsorship programmes can provide guidance and support for women. She highlights the importance of women mentoring other women. When women see other women in a leadership role it helps break down gender stereotypes and inspires them to envision themselves in leadership roles.
As a mother of two, Wells understands the challenges of balancing work and personal life. She suggests that offering flexible work arrangements, such as remote work options or flexible scheduling, can help women manage their personal and professional obligations effectively.
Communication and setting clear boundaries between work and family time and having a strong support system both at work and at home are also key to achieving a work-life balance, in Wells’ experience.
For women who want a career in retail, Wells recommends educational opportunities that provide a solid foundation in business, management, marketing, or real estate. Consider internships or entry-level positions in retail to gain practical experience and develop relevant skills. It is crucial to stay updated on the latest trends, technologies and consumer behaviour through industry publications, conferences and networking events.
She enjoys working for a company that supports her and stands behind her decisions. “If you want a career that challenges you to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, be creative and innovative and enhance your people, communication and problem-solving skills, then a career in the property industry is for you.” – Zandri Wells
