WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT THE FIRST ANNUAL FILMIT AWARDS

On Thursday evening 9 December the nominees of the high school short film competition Filmit came together at Atlantic Studios in Cape Town to celebrate the conclusion of Filmit 2021 and to find out who the winners in each category are. The excitement of the learners was tangible. They had the opportunity to rub shoulders with actors and Filmit mentors Deon Lotz and Nicole Fortuin, who both supported Filmit by attending. The learners enjoyed the privilege to meet Suidooster stars Dean Smith and Natasha van der Merwe too. A special moment was when producer Bradley Joshua (Gambit Films owner and Filmit judge) visited the studio to meet and congratulate some of the winners in person. He will be mentoring some of these winners in the new year. The representative of Filmit’s main sponsors (Atterbury and WeBuyCars) – Marques Bosch (WeBuyCars) – attended the event to officially announce and hand over the award for the Best Film winner(s).

Zia Geldenhuys (Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof) wrote, directed, edited and produced the short film ‘Theatre Kid’. She walked away with 5 awards, including the main prize of Best Film 2021. Her fellow team member and only actress in the film (who was also nominated for ‘Best Actress’) – Luchuané Hechter – attend the event with her. Zia Geldenhuys won in the following categories: Best Film, Best Music Editor, Best Special Effects and Creativity On Set, Best Editing and Best Screenplay.

Actress Logan Davids (Mitchell’s Plain High School) walked away with the Best Actress Award for her role in the short film ‘Too bright to shine’. Her excitement was infectious, especially when she met her appointed mentor – the actress Nicole Fortuin – known for her roles in ‘Blood & Water’, ‘Alles Malan’, ‘Die Boekklub’ and the movie ‘Flatland’ on Netflix. Davids also received the Best Ensemble Award on behalf of her fellow actors at Mitchell’s Plain High School. This group of young actors will be receiving mentorship from the veteran actress Antoinette Kellerman.

Worcester Gymnasium impressed Filmit’s panel of judges due to the high production and broadcasting quality of their documentary ‘Conflict: a journey to passion’. The learners were surprised by their two wins and the ‘Special Jury Award’ – which was appointed to them by the panel of judges. Jaeden Beukes received the award for Best Director and Hope Dliso for Best Original Song.

Paul Roos Gymnasium also walked away with two awards. Ian Lubbe won the Best Poster Award and Christiaan Heydenrych the Best Original Soundtrack Award.

WENNERS AANGEKONDIG BY DIE EERSTE JAARLIKSE FILMIT TOEKENNINGS

Op Donderdagaand 9 Desember het genomineerdes van die hoërskool kortfilmkompetisie Filmit by Atlantic Studios in Kaapstad bymekaar gekom om die afsluiting van die Filmit kompetisie te vier en uit te vind wie wenners in die onderskeie Filmit kategorieë is. Die opwinding van die leerders was tasbaar. Die leerders het die kans gehad om skouers te skuur met akteurs en Filmit mentors Deon Lotz en Nicole Fortuin. Dit was ook vir die leerders ‘n groot voorreg om vir Dean Smith en Natasha van der Merwe van Suidooster-faam te ontmoet. Van die wenners het ook die geleentheid geniet om met Bradley Joshua (vervaardiger en eienaar van Gambit Films) te gesels. Bradley Joshua het gedien op die Filmit beoordelaarspaneel en sal ook van die wenners mentor as deel van hul pryspakket. Marques Bosch van WeBuyCars het as verteenwoordiger vir Filmit se hoofborge (Atterbury en WeBuyCars) opgetree en die groot prys (Beste Film) oorhandig.

Zia Geldenhuys (Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof) het eiehandig vervaardig aan die kortfilm ‘Theatre Kid’. Sy het weggestap met vyf toekennings, saam met haar mede-spanmaat en jong akrise Luchuané Hechter. Zia het toekennings in die volgende kategorieë ontvang: Beste Film, Beste Musiekredigering, Beste spesiale effekte en kreatiwiteit op stel, Beste redigering, en Beste Draaiboekskrywer.

Aktrise Logan Davids van Mitchell’s Plain Hoërskool het weggestap met die Beste Aktrise toekenning vir haar spel in die kortfilm ‘Too bright to shine’. Haar opgewondenheid was aansteeklik en die oomblik groot toe sy haar aangestelde mentor, Nicole Fortuin (Blood and Water, Flatland, Alles Malan) ontmoet. Davids het ook namens haar mede-akteurs by Mitchell’s Plain Hoërskool die toekenning vir Beste Ensemble aanvaar.

Worcester Gimnasium het beoordelaars veral beïndruk met die hoë produksie- en uitsaaiwaarde van hul dokumentêr ‘Conflict: a journey to passion’. Die leerders is stomgeslaan deur hul twee toekennings en die ‘Special Jury Award’ wat aan hulle toegestaan is deur die beoordelaarspaneel. Jaeden Beukes het weggestap met die toekenning vir Beste Regisseur en Hope Dliso met die toekenning Beste Oorspronklike lied.

Paul Roos Gimnasium het ook weggestap met twee toekennings – Ian Lubbe met Beste Plakkaatontwerp en Christiaan Heydenrych met die Beste Oorspronklike Klankbaan.
