Newtown Junction, Jozi’s newest shopping centre, is in a very creative spirit this December. Situated in the artistic heartland of Newtown and with The Market Theatre as a neighbour, it is not surprising that the management has made entertainment a priority this Festive season.

Thursdays and Saturdays have been programmed with not to be missed performances on the attractive open-air piazza where bronze statues and the picturesque fountains set the scene for some special entertainment moments.

There will be song and dance aplenty outdoors while upstairs in the delightful pop-up story theatre and gallery, actress Vanessa Cooke will don the guise of Mamma G and delight the younger shoppers with a rich array of story delights during her special reading spots from 12:00 on Saturday and from 2:30 on Thursdays. The pop-up gallery also features some inspiring work from young Johannesburg artists from the Arts Alive School’s visual arts initiative of 2013 and 2014. See the Corridors of Freedom as well as the Metaphors of Freedom in 3-D in exhibition and marvel at the skill of Johannesburg’s young artists. You won’t struggle to find your way around the centre because the Cat in the Hat will be there to accompany and entertain you on your journey and to hand out spot prizes to lucky winners. Other delightful Festive characters will also be in the spirit of giving and entertaining at Newtown Junction! The Cat has it on good authority that there are some smart phones that will be given out.

Every Saturday afternoon on the piazza shoppers and visitors to Newtown Junction will have the opportunity to sing their favorite karaoke songs with encouragement from WITS Radio DJ’s. On Sat 29 –The Field Band Foundation will perform on the piazza at 12:30 and at 2:00. This youthful award winning 60 member marching band is certain to be a crowd pleaser of note. Song-bird Kiruna Devar will delight the crowd with her rich voice in some mesmerizing jazz standards, contemporary pop and ever-green Christmas songs on Sat 29th November, Thursday the 11th & 18th and Saturday the 13th & 20th of December. The final performance from this young artists, a matriculant from the National School of the Arts, is on Christmas eve and will ensure that the spirit of Christmas is well nestled in everybody’s heart.

To get the beat in your feet and a dance in your heart – the sensational Moving into Dance will perform on Sat 29th November, Thursday 4th, Saturday 6th and Thursday the

11th of December. They hand over their dancing shoes to the Dancing Belles and Friends who bring ballet and contemporary to the Festivities on the 13th, 18th, 20th and the 24th.

The 18th December is a date to circle if you want to catch “The Grannies” doing some Festive shopping at Newtown Junction. These performance artists will delight visitors with their hysterical antics and inventive and emotional responses to the shopping centre environment in which they find themselves. The Grannies at Newtown Junction is a unique experience and shouldn’t be missed.
