Atterbury and USN have just announced that the two companies are jointly donating R500 000 to Olympic medal winners. The Atterbury Trust is also launching Spansaam, a crowdfunding project to reward the medal winners. Other organisations and individuals are invited to contribute to the fund. The aim is to reach the target amount of R1 300 000 within a week. The fund intends to pay out R500 000 for a gold medal and R250 000 per silver medal and a fixed amount for the coaches of medal winners. If the target amount is exceeded, the surplus will remain in a trust account to supplement the government shortfall, whether on the sports, cultural or community front.
SASCOC’s president, Barry Hendricks, announced over the weekend that no financial compensation is available for South Africa’s only two medal winners in the recent Olympic Games in Japan, swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker and surfer Bianca Buitendag. This statement has since been repudiated and SASCOC said that negotiations about compensation are still in process.

We have respect for the perseverance of athletes who have continued to train throughout the Covid Pandemic to give their best in Tokyo. These medal winners are an inspiration to young athletes and must be retained for South Africa.” USN contributes to the promotion of sports among the underprivileged and sports scholarships for talented young people.
Spansaam officially kicked off on Wednesday morning, 11 August on Die GROOT Ontbyt on kykNET when Armond Boshoff, Albé Geldenhuys and Tatjana Schoenmaker were in the studio to give more information about the inspiration behind Spansaam.
