Newtown Junction is Atterbury’s inner-city hub where arts, culture and heritage meets fashion. Just south of the Nelson Mandela bridge in the heart of Newtown, the one-of-a-kind mall is surrounded by the rich cultural history shared by icons such as Miriam Makeba, Bra Hugh Masekela and Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, who made their names here. And in the month of November there are loads of reasons to visit!

  1. Come enjoy live music and DJs every weekend at News Café and Cappello.
  1. Hop off at Stop 8 of the Joburg City Red Bus and visit Imbali store where great authentic souvenirs are sold.
  1. With Newtown Junction as your base you are right in the middle of so many tourist attractions and entertainment venues, from the Market Theatre, Carfax and Bassline to Museum Africa, the Workers Museum, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and the SAB World of Beer.
  1. When you’re all touristed out, come back to Work Shop New Town and snack on dim sum at Town the Bar, or if you want something more meaty choose the steam-punk-bootlegger’s brewery-inspired Potato Shed restaurant and order a Red Burger (yes, the bun is red!) and one of the barrel-fermented cocktails on tap.
  1. After lunch, you can browse through the best of authentic African fashion at Work Shop New Town; and maybe even meet some of the designers and creatives who are shaping the fashion. Look out for Maxhosa by Laduma, Maria Mcloy, Dr Pachanga and many others.
  1. If you need more pampering after your shopping spree, drop into Royal Gel-Ly Beauty and Nail Bar, where you’ll be treated like a queen (or a king), whether you want a nail treatment, massage, spa facial or a pedicure….
  1. Don’t miss the first of many Hip Hop Junction Fridays on 4 November – starting at 4pm you can enjoy the sounds of Don Dada and the GovenderZEmpire.
  1. On 26 November join in the Saturday month-end PIC NIC; and come lounge on the picnic area between the Market Theatre and Work Shop New Town from noon to 5pm, enjoying live music and entertainment for the kids. Kiddies’ picnic baskets are stuffed with treats like mini red burgers and colouring kits, and adults get yummy snacks like pulled pork buns and all the favourites from The Potato Shed, including crudités for vegans.
  1. One Sunday per month, a free jazz concert takes place in the piazza, so make a note in your diary of Sundaes on Junction on 27 November this month.
  1. On Thursdays and Saturdays only the Gentlemen’s Arthouse opens its doors to the public for a one-of-a-kind experience in a private, intimate, lovingly restored heritage gem of a building on the edge of Newtown Junction. Enjoy a beautiful show over a delicious six-course meal for R680 per person. Booking is essential, Visit www.gentlemansarthouse.com for more details. Also available for private functions for up to 50 guests.
